Chapter 11: After Enrollment

Chapter 10: Medicare Advantage Plans Part C—HMOs vs PPOs

What’s Next?

Once you have enrolled in Medicare for the first time, following the enrollment guidelines established in chapter 3, you will be able to make changes to your plan during the Open Enrollment Period.

Open Enrollment Period

This period runs from October 15th to December 7th every year. The Open Enrollment Period allows for you to make changes or additions to your plan, including Part C Advantage Plans, Part D Prescription Drug Plans, and/or Medigap Supplemental Plans.

The additions and/or changes you make during the Open Enrollment Period become effective January 1st.

If you are unhappy with the changes, there is a brief “do-over” provision that allows you to make another change.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can change to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch back to Original Medicare once during open enrollment.

Bottom Line: This open enrollment period applies to people who are already enrolled in and receiving Medicare coverage of any kind and are seeking to change their coverage.
